Start by selecting a planter box with pre-drilled drainage holes. If yours lacks them, drill several holes evenly across the bottom. The critical next step is to install a high-quality liner. Use a durable, puncture-resistant material like pond liner or heavy-duty plastic, ensuring it covers the entire interior and extends up the sides. Cut small slits in the liner directly over the drainage holes to allow water to escape. Before adding soil, create a drainage layer. Fill the bottom with 2-3 inches of materials like horticultural gravel, clay pebbles, or broken pottery shards. This layer prevents soil from clogging the drainage holes and facilitates water flow. For an extra layer of security, apply a clear, waterproof sealant around the drainage holes and any seams or joints on the exterior of the planter box. This is especially important for wooden planters. Always use a saucer or tray underneath your planter box to catch any immediate overflow. Consider elevating your planter box an inch or two on feet or a stand to promote air circulation and ensure the drainage holes are completely clear. Finally, be mindful of your watering habits. Water slowly and deeply until you see a small amount of water escape into the saucer, then stop immediately. Empty the saucer regularly to prevent overflow. Regular inspection of the liner and drainage holes for clogs or damage completes your leak-prevention system, ensuring harmonious urban gardening.
