First, perform the classic finger test. Insert your finger about 2 inches into the soil. If it feels soggy, wet, and mud-like hours after watering, drainage is likely poor. Well-draining soil should feel moist but not waterlogged.
Watch for tell-tale signs from your plants. Yellowing leaves, especially lower ones, are a classic symptom. Stunted growth, wilting despite wet soil, and a general look of unhappiness can all point to "wet feet." A musty smell from the soil or the presence of fungus gnats are also red flags.
For a direct test, water your planter thoroughly. Observe how quickly water flows out the bottom holes. It should drain freely, not pool on the surface or trickle out slowly. Next, check the saucer or surface beneath the box 30 minutes later. If there's standing water, your drainage is insufficient.
To fix poor drainage, first ensure your boxes have adequate holes. If not, carefully drill more. Consider adding a layer of coarse material like pebbles or broken pottery at the bottom. Most importantly, use a high-quality potting mix designed for containers; never use dense garden soil. For existing planters, gently aerate the soil surface with a fork to improve water penetration.
