Root rot occurs when excess water saturates the soil, suffocating roots and promoting harmful fungi. Here’s a practical guide to create an effective drainage system. First, always choose or build planter boxes with multiple drainage holes at the bottom. If your box lacks holes, drill several yourself. Cover these holes with a permeable landscape fabric or mesh screen to prevent soil from washing out while allowing water to escape. Next, create a drainage layer. Add a two-inch layer of coarse materials like gravel, pebbles, or broken pottery shards at the bottom of the box. This layer creates space for excess water to pool away from the root zone. On top of this, consider adding a thin layer of sand for improved filtration. The key is your soil mix. Never use garden soil alone, as it compacts in containers. Instead, use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix. You can enhance a standard mix by adding perlite, vermiculite, or coarse sand to improve aeration and drainage. When planting, avoid burying your plants too deep and ensure the soil level remains a couple of inches below the box's rim to prevent overflow. Water wisely. Check soil moisture by sticking your finger an inch deep—water only when it feels dry. Ensure water flows freely out of the drainage holes during each watering, but never let your box sit in a saucer full of stagnant water. Elevate your planter box slightly using pot feet or bricks to promote air circulation and water runoff. Finally, maintain your system. Periodically check that drainage holes are not clogged by roots or debris. Refresh the potting mix every couple of years to maintain its structure and drainage capacity.
