Squirrels digging in your urban planter boxes can be a frustrating problem, scattering soil and damaging young plants. Fortunately, several effective and humane strategies can deter these clever critters. Start by creating a physical barrier. Placing a layer of chicken wire or hardware cloth just beneath the soil surface or over the top of the planter allows plants to grow through but prevents squirrels from reaching the soil to dig. You can also use lightweight bird netting secured over the box.
Next, consider natural repellents. Squirrels dislike certain smells and tastes. Sprinkle cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, or commercially available capsaicin-based sprays on the soil.
