Extreme winter weather can be tough on your urban planter boxes, but with proper preparation, you can ensure they survive the cold season. Start by ensuring excellent drainage to prevent soil from becoming waterlogged and freezing solid, which can crack materials. Emptying the boxes of soil is ideal, but if left filled, add a thick layer of mulch like straw or leaves to insulate the soil and protect perennial plant roots.
For the planter structure itself, insulation is key. Wrap wooden or metal boxes with materials like burlap, horticultural fleece, or bubble wrap to buffer against freeze-thaw cycles. Elevating planters off cold surfaces with pot feet or bricks prevents bottom frost adhesion and improves airflow. If possible, move lighter containers to a sheltered location like a garage or shed.
Finally, select durable materials like frost-resistant ceramic, thick plastic, or rot-resistant cedar for future planters. Avoid leaving terra cotta pots outside, as they are prone to cracking. A little effort in the fall will protect your investment and have your planters ready for a vibrant spring.
