Having a tiny balcony is no barrier to creating a lush, green retreat. The key to success lies in choosing a planter box with the right dimensions. For most urban balconies, a planter box that is 18 to 24 inches (45-60 cm) in length, 8 to 12 inches (20-30 cm) in width, and 10 to 14 inches (25-35 cm) in depth offers an excellent balance. This size provides ample soil volume for a variety of herbs, leafy greens, and compact flowering plants without overwhelming your limited floor space.
Depth is particularly crucial. A minimum depth of 10-12 inches is recommended for healthy root development for most vegetables and perennials. For shallow-rooted herbs and lettuces, 6-8 inches may suffice. Always measure your balcony's precise dimensions, especially the width of railings if using rail planters, and ensure you leave adequate walking space. Consider using two or three medium-sized planters instead of one large one for greater flexibility in arranging your petite garden paradise.
