Fungus gnats buzzing around your indoor plants are a common nuisance. These tiny flies thrive in moist potting soil, where they lay eggs. While the adults are mostly annoying, the larvae can harm young plant roots. Don't worry—you can reclaim your urban jungle with a few straightforward steps.
First, let the top layer of soil dry out completely between waterings. Fungus gnats need damp soil to breed. By allowing the top inch or two to dry, you break their life cycle. Check soil moisture with your finger before reaching for the watering can.
Next, deploy yellow sticky traps. Place them horizontally on the soil surface or stick them vertically near the plants. The bright yellow color attracts the adult gnats, trapping them and reducing the population. This is an excellent way to monitor the infestation level.
For a more aggressive attack on the larvae, try a hydrogen peroxide solution. Mix one part 3% hydrogen peroxide with four parts water and water your plants thoroughly with it. The solution will fizz, killing larvae and eggs on contact without harming your plants when used correctly.

To prevent future outbreaks, always use pots with drainage holes and avoid letting plants sit in saucers of water. Consider adding a half-inch layer of sand or fine gravel on top of the soil; this creates a dry barrier that deters egg-laying adults. Finally, be cautious with new plants or bags of potting mix, as they can be the source of an infestation. Quarantine new plants and inspect soil before use.
