Wondering if your urban garden is thriving or just surviving? Roots becoming pot-bound, or root-bound, is a common issue in containers. Here’s how to tell and what to do.
First, watch for stunted growth. If your plant has stopped getting taller or producing new leaves despite proper care, the roots may have run out of space. Next, check the drainage holes. Roots poking out are a clear distress signal. Watering problems are another clue. If water rushes straight through the pot without soaking in, the dense root ball can’t absorb it. Conversely, if the soil stays soggy for days, choked roots may be rotting.
For a definitive check, gently slide the plant out of its box. Healthy roots are light-colored and spread throughout the soil. Pot-bound roots form a tight, circular mass that mirrors the container's shape—you might see more roots than soil.
If your plant is pot-bound, don’t panic. For smaller plants, gently loosen the outer roots and repot into a container one size larger with fresh potting mix. For large plants in fixed boxes, carefully prune up to one-third of the outer roots and replant in the same box with new soil. Regular root checks every season or two can prevent this issue, keeping your urban oasis healthy and vibrant.
