Common Problems and Effective Solutions for Urban Planter Boxes

How can I tell if the roots of my plants are bound in the urban planter box?

Noticing your urban greenery looking a bit under the weather? It might be root bound. This common issue occurs when a plant's roots have outgrown its container, circling and matting into a tight ball with nowhere left to grow. Here’s how to diagnose it in your planter box.

First, observe the plant's growth. Has it slowed down or stopped completely, even during the growing season? Are the leaves yellowing, wilting, or dropping more than usual? Does water rush straight through the drainage holes without being absorbed? These are classic above-ground clues.

For confirmation, you'll need to inspect the roots. Gently tilt the planter and ease the plant out. If the root mass holds the exact shape of the pot and you see more dense, circling roots than soil, the plant is root bound. In severe cases, roots may even protrude from the drainage holes or push the plant upward.

If you find a root bound plant, don't worry. The solution is repotting. Choose a new container that is only 1-2 inches larger in diameter. Gently loosen the outer roots and trim any excessively long or dead ones. Place it in the new pot with fresh, well-draining potting mix. Water thoroughly to help it settle. With more space to grow, your plant will soon return to its vibrant, healthy self.
