Proper drainage is a cornerstone of successful urban gardening. Our planter boxes are designed with this critical need in mind. Most models feature integrated drainage holes at the base, allowing excess water to escape freely and preventing root rot. For added convenience and water conservation, many of our boxes incorporate a self-watering or reservoir system. This design includes a built-in water chamber at the bottom, separated from the soil by a perforated platform. The soil draws moisture upward as needed, while an overflow hole in the chamber provides a crucial safety release during heavy rain or overwatering. For solid-bottom planters, we recommend creating a drainage layer using materials like pebbles or hydro granules before adding soil. This simple step creates an air pocket and helps manage water flow. Ultimately, good drainage combines physical outlets, mindful watering practices, and well-draining potting mix to ensure your urban plants thrive in a healthy, oxygenated root environment.
